Hard-disk Drive Protection

Problem: Overcurrent fault conditions.

Hard-disk drives must be protected from incorrect voltages due to misconnection of 12V, 5V, and/or 3.3V lines during installation. The variations in the host-computer power supplies may also result in AC ripple or incorrect polarity that can damage the tantalum capacitors on the drives.

Solution: PolySwitch and PolyZen devices.

PolySwitch devices help limit the flow of dangerously high currents during fault conditions and reset back to normal operating mode once the fault condition is removed; while PolyZen devices help clamp the voltage and shunt excess power to ground .

Problem: Solenoid Protection.

During normal conditions, the coil temperature increases each time the solenoid is cycled. A malfunctioning disk head causes constant current to be applied, and can cause abnormal operation. The coil temperature can continue to increase and can eventually burn out the coil wire.

Solution: PolySwitch devices.

The PolySwitch device trips at about 120°C, thus helping to limit the current so that the coil temperature gradually drops and the coil wire is undamaged.

Problem: Stalled Spindle Motor.

The high currents that exist when a motor stalls can cause failures in both the electromechanical device and the control electronics. This means that not only does the electromechanical device need to be replaced, but the control electronics must also be serviced or replaced.

Solution: PolySwitch devices.

PolySwitch devices used in the drive circuit can help save both the electromechanical device and the electronic control circuitry. By helping to limit the current when a problem occurs, a PolySwitch device can help prevent overheating of the magnetic coil in the electromechanical device.
