According to the IEC61000 4-5 standard, TRIACS and relays need to be protected from damage caused by lightning up to a 2k Volt surge level.

Solution: ROV + PolySwitch Device

A Metal Oxide Varistor (ROV) will help protect the TRIAC and relays from damage caused by lighting strikes. PolySwitch PPTC device helps protect the PCB traces in case of varistor short circuit or filter capacitor.This is because varistors can be damaged by overheating due to neutral loss or abnormal input voltages. To help prevent the varistor from overheating a PolySwitch PPTC device can be thermally coupled with the varistor to help limit current when overheating occurs and protect the varistor.
